September 2010 Football Calendar

calendarThere might not be a lot of football going on this weekend, but just as soon as the weekend is over, we have a very full month of footie ahead. Here’s a brief look at everything coming up in the world of football, so you can plan your couch time appropriately. There are many more league games than the ones we’ve listed, of course – we’ve tried to pick out some highlights.

5 September – AFCON 2012 qualifying
Not everyone took this weekend off from football. The group stage of Africa Cup of Nations qualifying continues today with Ghana, Egypt and Nigeria all in action.

7 September – Euro 2012 qualifiers
Most teams will play their second Euro qualifying match on Tuesday the seventh, and the matchday includes some really interesting fixtures. Some of the best on paper: Serbia vs. Slovenia, Bosnia vs. France, and Switzerland vs. England.

7-23 September – Copa Sudamericana Second Stage
South America’s continental cup is heating up, with 30 teams paying off to join defending champions LDU Quito in the Round of 16. This year, there are three all-Argentine matchups, as well as proper continental matches like Union San Felipe (Chile) vs. Guarani (Paraguay). Keep up with the competition on our Copa Sudamericana blog.

11 September – Bundesliga – Borussia Dortmund vs. Wolfsburg
It’s been a nightmare start for Wolfsburg, with two losses to kick off the season. Things will get no easier as they head to Dortmund. Not a must win, but they will be desperate to avoid getting zero points from their first three.

14-15 September – UEFA Champions League Matchday 1
Just a week after the Euro qualifying date, UEFA switches gears and opens the group stage of its premier club competition. Some huge matches right off the start: Werder Bremen vs. Spurs, Bayern Munich vs. Roma, Real Madrid vs. Ajax and more. For full group-by-group schedules, check out our Champions League fixtures page.

15-22 September – AFC Champions League Quarterfinals
Eight sides are left in the club championship of Asia, and four of them are South Korean. The K-League is dominating proceedings so far, but sides from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iran will look to make sure the Middle East region has at least a place at the final.

19 September – Premier League – Man United vs. Liverpool
Liverpool is struggling early, and there’s no worse time to be struggling than before a trip to Old Trafford. A result here would go a long way to righting the Liverpool ship. Always a marquee fixture on the English football calendar.

19 September – La Liga – Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona
We have to wait a bit longer to see the two giants of Spain meet in the first Clasico, but this could be a tricky match for Barcelona, with Atletico confident coming off of their UEFA Super Cup win. Real fans will temporarily be all for Atleti, hoping to see points dropped for their national, rather than local, rivals.

19 September – Ligue 1 – Bordeaux vs. Lyon
Both of these teams are expected to be fighting it out at the top of French football, and both are struggling near the bottom. After four matches, both are on four points, and if their struggles continue, this could be a very important result for either side.

24 September – MLS – LA Galaxy vs. New York Red Bulls
Thierry Henry, Rafa Marquez and the Red Bulls visit Donovan and (probably fit) Beckham in LA. One of the last big matches of the MLS season, before the MLS Cup playoffs begin.

25 September – Premier League – Man City vs. Chelsea
City is rising quickly, but this will be a true test of how far they’ve come, as a red-hot Chelsea side come to the Eastlands.

25 September – Serie A – Roma vs. Inter
This is interesting not least for its timing. Both sides will be preparing for Champions League play a few days later, but will need to concentrate on each other first. Other contenders like AC Milan will also be watching, perhaps hoping for a draw.

26 September – SPL – Aberdeen vs. Rangers
These are two teams that genuinely don’t like each other, and maybe the biggest recent rivalry in Scotland outside of the Old Firm derby. Dons have made a nice start to the season, and a result against Rangers here would add hugely to their confidence.

28-29 September – UEFA Champions League Matchday 2
Just before the end of September, already two of the six UCL group dates will be over. Some of the tastiest fixtures include: Valencia vs. Man United, Rubin Kazan vs. Barcelona and Chelsea vs. Marseille.
