Most superstars have a “breakout game” or a “breakout moment”. The one which says without a shadow of a doubt, “this special boy has arrived”. Sergio Canales, La Liga’s favorite confusing contract, had that game against Sevilla on Saturday, scoring both goals splendidly in Racing’s win. But it wasn’t the goals themselves which slack the jaw so – it’s the ease with which they were scored for a boy whose composure is merely eighteen years old. Touch and agility so deft you wonder if it even happened at all.

Of course this won’t send big clubs clamoring for his signature – they’ve already been there for some time.

We’d be remiss if failing to mention the brilliance of another teen plying his trade in the Spanish top flight, though this one gets enough pub having done hardly anything at all. That boy is Bojan, whose assists nearly took the spotlight off Lionel’s hat trick. Nearly.
