Serie B’s Top Keeper Courted by Chelsea

gianluigi_buffon_juventus.jpgTransfer rumors can be fun to talk about, but how many of them actually ever come true? Time will tell if today’s hot rumor will become a reality, but nevertheless it is a juicy one. According to the occasionally reliable Sun, Chelsea is pursuing Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon as a replacement for the injured Petr Cech.

Buffon’s agent, Paolo Fabbri, told the newspaper: “We are aware (Chelsea owner) Roman Abramovich can offer fortunes. What he needs is to convince the player it’s the right move for him.

“This is not a financial issue, it’s about a chance in life. I don’t think he wants to leave Italy but things can change very quickly in football.”

Things can change quickly indeed. Just yesterday Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was squashing speculation that Fabien Barthez would be brought in as the club’s third keeper by saying, “”Probably, what we have to try to get is a third goalkeeper and of course, Fabien is not a preferred third goalkeeper. He is a high-profile goalkeeper.”

Profiles don’t get much higher than the one belonging to Buffon, who, unlike Barthez, is still very much on top of his game. He has been extremely loyal to Juve, sticking with the club through its relegation, but you have to think that the opportunity to play for Chelsea in the Champions League might just outweigh the opportunity to play for Juventus against Treviso in Serie B.
