Sevilla and Espanyol to meet in UEFA Cup Final
By: Bob | May 3rd, 2007
The UEFA Cup has become somewhat of an afterthought thanks to the money and hype of the Champions League and thanks to the seemingly millions of teams that take part in the second tier tournament, but that won’t be the case this year in Spain where two of the country’s teams will meet in the finals. Tournament holders Sevilla overcame a 1-0 first leg defeat to defeat Osasuna 2-1 on aggregate. Espanyol has an easy time of it with Werder Bremen, beating the German side 5-1 on aggregate.
That sets up a clash between Sevilla, second place in La Liga and Espanyol, who are languishing in 12th place. Sevilla’s claim to fame is hoisting the UEFA Cup last year after they spanked Middlesbrough 4-0 in the final. They also could still win the league and the King’s Cup. Not too shabby.
Espanyol’s claim to fame is being the first club in the country founded by Spanish nations instead of foreigners. The club has never won a European competition, but it did when the Campionats de Catalunya 12 times between 1903 and 1940.
The cup final in Glasgow on May 16 will be the third meeting between the two teams this year. Sevilla beat Espanyol at home 3-1. Espanyol beat Sevilla at home 2-1. For what it is worth I think Sevilla will win in relatively easy fashion. They have the experience from last year’s cup run and their team is more talented than an Espanyol side that has had a tremendous UEFA Cup run.

It’s gonna be good. I really like the UEFA Cup, maybe that’s because it’s the only way France ever gets any coverage.

I thought the UEFA Cup was actually better than the CL this year, but that’s because I’m a biased La Liga fan.
