Shearer for England The Toon

It will shock no one who follows them even a little bit that Newcastle lost again over the weekend. They’re now 11th in the table and have lost three of their last four, including a home 3-0 thrashing by Liverpool, a performance so dire one wag wrote that the scoreline “flattered Newcastle.” Needless to say, it’s not good enough for Toon ownership or supporters, both of whom always have high expectations, and word on the street is that Big Sam Allardyce is just one loss away from the axe. Who’s set to take his place? Why, Alan Shearer, of course.
Shearer’s long been the Newcastle coach in waiting — the talk started while he was still playing, when he was briefly rumored he’d take an assistant role with Bobby Robson during his final year, and ease his way into the hotseat. That didn’t happen but, since his retirement, the Toon legend has managed to find time between all his punditry duties to take some of the FA courses that will, eventually, lead to a coaching license. He’s not quite there yet but, since the FA has already made an exception for Gareth Southgate, who didn’t have his license when he took over at Middlesbrough, not having that piece of paper probably wouldn’t be a problem for Shearer.
Needless to say, Newcastle ownership has poo-pooed both the Shearer rumors and the suggestion that Allardyce is on the chopping block; we’ll see what their story is after NUFC get their asses handed to them by Arsenal on Wednesday.
