Smile, you’re on Camera, Hooligans and Horse Lovers
By: Bob | June 18th, 2007
The past season in the English Premier League wasn’t exactly full of intrigue and mystery on the pitch, but away from the field it had all the elements of a cheap airport spy novel. The hijinks and high technology might be extended to the terraces next season if a technology company has its way.
The company, 802 Global, is in talks with the league to supply it with wireless devices that will make keeping track of troublemakers in the stands even easier than the existing closed circuit cameras.
Hidden in lapels and hats, minute cameras would allow spotters in the crowd to beam live pictures from inside the stadium back to a control room where the images could be scanned in real-time for troublemakers and hooligans.
Sounds like a brilliant idea. Perhaps they could also include cameras in the players’ uniforms so that it can help referees keep track of troublemakers and hooligans on the pitch.
The use of closed circuit televisions is hardly new in Britain, of course. Just ask Teddy Sheringham, Bobby Zamora and Shaun Newton. The three former West Ham teammates are in trouble with the law for swapping speeding points after their driving infractions were captured on London speed cameras. Sheringham and gang could face 8 months to life in prison for “perverting the course of justice”.
Speaking of perverts and closed circuit cameras, the next time you head on out to the barn for a little fun you might want to consider finding a spot with a bit more privacy.
