So good they named him twice

By: Bob | September 4th, 2007

jay-jay-okocha.jpgThere are a few players in this world who I would go out of my way to watch play regardless of where they are playing and regardless of where they are in their playing career. Jay-Jay Okocha is one of these players. The Nigerians midfielder who inspired Bolton fans to make t-shirts that read “Jay Jay. So Good They Named Him Twice” has been signed by the English Championship League side and one-time ugliest shirt wearers Hull City (coincidentally we have a Hull City blog in the works).

At the age of 34 and after spending a year making mondo money in Qatar, Okocha is back in the country where he played 145 games for Bolton. Critics might label Okocha all flash and little substance. To those critics I say: who cares?

Okocha might be all about the showboat and that is more than good enough for me. In the past couple of decades there have been only a handful of players capable of pulling off the crazy moves that he has. No longer the player he was when he was named to the 1998 World Cup tournament team, Okocha is still capable of leaving his opponents shorts on the ground and exciting the YouTube highlight fans amongst us.

He might be a difference maker for Hull City or he might end up a flashy signing who doesn’t do squat. Either way I am just happy that he is once again playing in a league where we’ll be able to see why they named him twice.
