So How Does that Canadian Champions League Spot Work?

By: Laurie | February 1st, 2008

ohcanadaeh.jpgIf you’re like me, you saw that Canada had its very own CONCACAF Champions League spot and thought: Umm…okay. Canada has precisely ONE MLS team. So how does this work? Automatic qualification for Toronto FC?

Turns out our guy Nicolas over at Toronto Offside is all over this story. And it turns out that they’re not going to consider just MLS, but also USL1, the division below MLS. Which brings the entry pool to three, count ‘em, three teams.

The Canadian Soccer Association, who, initially will work with the top-three professional clubs - the Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Impact de Montréal, will confirm shortly a new club championship to be played this spring/summer which will determine its representative. Toronto FC currently plays in Major League Soccer while the Whitecaps and Impact play in the United Soccer Leagues First Division.

Since I live in a USL city (for the moment,) I think it’s fantastic that USL teams are getting a shot at a little glory. As Seattle showed in the US Open Cup last year, there are some USL teams who can give the big boys of MLS a run for their money, and it would be exciting to see it happen in Canada.

So don’t get too complacent, Toronto. The Whitecaps and the Impact are coming for you.

Stop by Toronto Offside for more details.

Pretty sure the Lynx were in the PDL last year, no longer in the USL once TFC came to town.

PDL is the third division of USL.

And quite frankly they’ve been a PDL team for years (zing).
