Soccer Fans Support their Clubs through Tattoos
By: Bob | February 27th, 2007
One of the stranger memories I have from being in Germany during the World Cup last summer is running into a fan from Croatia who was shirtless and who had the name “Srna” tattooed on his back like it was a name on the back of a jersey. I wanted to ask him what inspired him to put the name of Croatian footballer Dario Srna permanently in ink on his back, but it was late at night, I had had about ten too many beers and the dude was built like a brick house and stumbling like he had had twenty beers too many. I’d name my son Gheorghe Hagi but I don’t have any desire to have his name on my body when I am 90.
Back in the day before tattoos became a necessary fashion accessory for all the Beautiful People, you’d rarely see them on people who didn’t drive a motorcycle or who didn’t support a football club.
As The Mighty MJD points out, Sports Illustrated has another one of its slideshows that is hard not to look at. It has some examples of some crazy fans’ sports-related tattoos including the footie ones below. Sadly, they don’t include a picture of our favorite Boca Juniors’ supporter.

On the nipple, man? Seriously?

Those hands have probably been used for more than just making quiche.

The broken-bottle-across-the-back scar is a nice touch.

Reminds me of the movie Amando A Maradona where the filmcrew showed maybe 20 people with tattoos of Maradona (him scoring, celebrating or a simple “10″). They even had one guy who said Diego wrote his name on his arm (with a pen of course) and the guy ran into the next tattoo parlor and made the autograph permanent.

I spent a lot of time with England fans in Japan in 2002 and Portugal in 2006, and there’s a certain age/class group of that male variety that it seems almost impossible to find without a three lions tattoo, usually on the calf. Not hot.
Also: TOON ARMY! Nice.

Reminds me of the Newcastle fan in the mid 1990s who had Andy Cole’s face tattooed on his calf and three weeks later the club sold Cole to Man.United.
