Soccer Tennis: 100% Wynalda Approved
By: Bob | October 10th, 2007
What do Eric Wynalda, Paul Caligiuri, Thomas Dooley, Preki and Marcelo Balboa have in common? Besides being players from an era of American soccer that many would like to forget they also are all down with this week’s entry into the odd soccer games annals: Soccer Tennis. As the name would imply, Soccer Tennis involves motorcycles, fire juggling clowns and bikini-clad cheerleaders. Actually, that would make the sport a lot cooler to watch, but alas it simply is a game of tennis played with a soccer ball.
The rules are fairly simple. The game is played on a regulation sized tennis court with a net that is no higher than 39 inches. Each team has three players. Matches are best of three games to 15 points. Unlike ping pong, you don’t have to win by two points. That is scandalous if you ask me. The ball is kicked off and the receiving team can touch it no more than three times. There are referees on hand to hand out yellow and red cards, presumably if you fail to dress in white and properly bow to the royalty box before the match.
Forms of Soccer Tennis are played around the world and have been used as training for real soccer teams. Thomas Dooley is looking to take the sport to the next level by organizing a national league in the U.S. If he can guarantee that players frequently tumble into the net like in the video below and that Ana Kournikova plays in a bikini, Dooley might be on to something.

Soccer Tennis (or Tennis-ballon, as they call it France) rules! It’s so much fun to do bike-kicks close to the net.
If you haven’t tried it before, I highly recommend it.Posted from

I really want to try it. I wonder if the local tennis courts are going to be friendly to the idea, though. It might freak out the V-neck sweater crowd, which is even more reason to try it out.
