Soundoff: How Low Can Your Football Team Go Before You Get Angry?

By: Daryl | December 11th, 2009

hulk angry at football teamYesterday we asked for your World Cup expectations. Today it’s all about club football. Particularly because of the situation at Liverpool, who’ve been knocked out of the Champions League early and currently sit 7th in the Premier League (and face Arsenal on Sunday). Whatever your feelings about Rafa Benitez, I imagine Liverpool’s current position is very much below what Liverpool fans find acceptable.

Surely every team (or at least every fan) has a lower limit. A level which is unacceptable for their club. A point which, if reached, they’ll demand that something changes (usually the manager).

Of course, it’s different for everyone. For my team Wolves I could definitely tolerate being relegated from the Premiership, and could also tolerate not being promoted from the Championship (and did so for many many years). But for myself, Wolves finishing below mid-table in the Championship is 100% unacceptable. That would make me mad.

So two questions:

1. Who’s your team?, and
2. How low can they go before you get angry?

    1. Newcastle United

    2. bottom of Championship

I am really a sorry piece of work I started following Newcastle last year when they were relegated from premiership to championship, so could not survive another relegation.
  • Easy, four matches without a win.

Barca fan here. When I see the central pairing of rafa nad chyg, I get pissed.

Also when Guardiola doesnt dress spiffy.
  • Assyriska - I'm generally unhappy unless we win the European Champions League, hence I don't have many friends.
  • Spurs, and Last season being in the relegation fight for so long had my blood boiling. but all is well now.

Rapid Bucharest: Anything less than winning the league and I'm furious.

If we drop below 11th I'm angry (for this season anyway). You guys better watch yourselves.

fiorentina, and i'll only be mad if jovetic or vargas get sold in the next few transfer markets.

Toronto FC fan. The 5-1 loss to NYRB at the end of the season which cost us a playoff entry was pretty bad. I put the jersey in the closet for a couple weeks after that, but I got over it. As for my EPL team, Manchester City, Sven's long second half slide the year he was there was irritating but not devastating. If things go pear shaped this year, and they certainly could since it is City, I can't imagine it getting so bad that we go down.

Daryl, sorry this is off topic but I'm curious how Wolverhampton is almost universally referred to as Wolves even though they are technically the Wolverhampton Wanderers. Even the logo has a Wolf image.

Is it because basically everyone thinks "wtf is a wanderer anyway?"

chelsea, although of course it's all or nothing when you're trying to win the league, i would still not be incredibly angry with 2nd because man united are a good team. We would have done something wrong if we were third though.

In the champions league, if we didn't win it i would continue to be frustrated. I wouldn't be angry per se, just frustrated.

Atletico Madrid, and I get angry when they're not within the top 6 spots of the table, or when they lose to teams much lower down the table. So yes, I'm angry right now.

Also something funny that I remember. After Atletico beat Barca 4-3 last season, somebody linked me to this "Letter to Guardiola" from an angry fan pretty much outlining that he's tactically inflexible and is leading the team into nowhere with "immature decisions". Mind you, this was after they had 2 (or three) consecutive losses. Barca ended up winning everything. Some fans are just too critical, or are just glory hunters.

Sounders FC, and there is no lower limit. We don't have relegation, and a low final position just means a high pick in the draft next year. Take that, multi-tier free market football structures!

I'm a Barcelona fan and I will ALWAYS stick with them. Through thick and thin.
  • Lee
    Liverpool fan here.

I'm currently happy with things overall at Liverpool. With our budget we should not expect to finish any higher than 4th-5th this season. But thanks to Rafa he has gotten everyones hopes up and now that we're having a poor season everyone's knee's have started to jerk.

Anyway, to answer your post. To get me angry we would have to go back to how we were when Souness was in charge.

if they spend less than 30 million during the transfer period. then i'll be the hulk.

A bare here, if Ranjurs don't get at least three altercations with riot police in our European travels, then it's an off season for us.

    WEE ARE DA PEEPL!

Arsenal, and if we start a team with an average age of over 12, i am angry.
  • Xavier
Bristol City, and if the food stall's price for a chicken pie rises beyond £6, then i get mad. but football wise a relegation battle would be tolerable if we survive it, but relegation to league 1 would be a tipping point.
  • Sam
I'm Tottenham, and as it is right now if we dropped out of European spots I'd be angry, especially since we should be in third right now after dropping 4 very attainable points in the last two matches.
  • France, and if Raymond Domenech fails to incite murderous rage among at least 33% of the world's population, I'm pissed.
  • kabir
I'm an Inter fan, and I would be pissed if they didn't make it past the round of 16 this time (in the CL)
  • Steve S., Alberta, Canada
I am a frustrated Liverpool fan.
If the Reds are not playing consistently well and in the top five by late January I will really begin to see red and curse more at random things (not just clueless self-absorbed drivers).
