SoundOff: Which Footballers Have Scored Against Their Former Clubs?

By: Daryl | October 5th, 2009

Kenny Miller scored both goals for Rangers in the Old Firm derby this weekend. The same Kenny Miller who used to play for Celtic in 2006/7.

Players scoring against their former employers isn’t all that rare. In fact it seems weirdly common. It’s one of the unwritten laws of football.

Maybe the players have extra motivation? Or is it just that when a player scores against a former team, everyone pays a little more attention?

Below are a couple other examples of players returning to haunt their ex-teammates, but then we’re looking for your suggestions in the comments…

Luis Figo (very very) famously made the switch from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000. In Novemeber 2001 he was on target in El Clasico, to give Real Madrid a 2-0 win.

More recently there was Emmanuel Adebayor scoring for Man City against Arsenal and celebrating like a mad fool. You may have already heard about this one.

In 1974, Man Utd legend was seeing out his career with a season across town at Man City, and ended up scoring the outrageous backheel (below) against his beloved former team. Law believed at the time that the goal had relegated Man Utd, but apparently it made no difference in the end. Still, got to appreciate the deliberately muted celebration.

Mahamadou Diarra left Lyon for Real Madrid, and then scored against hid former French teammates in the Champions League:

(thanks to Inara for that one).

So, over to you. Which players have scored against their former clubs? We’ll add the most memorable to the list here.

Mahamadou Diarra against Lyon in the Champions League, barely four months after he left us for Real Madrid. The bastard.

If you count loans, Nikola Zigic scored for Valencia against Racing yesterday (where he was loaned to).

Tevez scored once (or twice) against West Ham. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfiIZ2JE5TU amazing goal

Diego Forlan scored twice against Villarreal last season.
The first one was quite nice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV-NyMsdoOQ (second goal)

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored against his old club (Oporto) in the CL, and had a pleasantly muted celebration afterwards. This was a few seasons back.

And yes, Eto’o against Real Madrid. Eto’o against Real Madrid a THOUSAND TIMES.

Ironic, that just a few short days after this post, David Dunne goes and rubs it all in faces of Man City.

Alecko Eskandarian went on a tear either earlier this year, or last year (MLS format confuses me), and scored against every single one of this former clubs (dc united, toronto fc, real salt lake, and chivas USA) and capped it off by scoring against the new york red bulls who’s stadium is actually in bergen county new jersey… the county he grew up and his family lives in.

    Impressive.
