SoundOff: Who is the Hardest Working Player in Football?

By: Daryl | September 7th, 2009

It’s Labor Day here in the USA, a day to celebrate workers by giving them the day off. Because we love a timely themed post here on The Offside, it seems appropriate to ask: Who is the hardest working player in football?

Anyone who says Dimitar Berbatov gets a digital slap.

The player that immediately comes to mind is an all action, everywhereatonce midfielder like Steven Gerrard. Or maybe it’s a tough tackler like Rino Gattuso, who does everyone else’s running for them without grabbing the Gerrard-like headlines.

Overlapping fullbacks put in some honest graft too. Think about how Dani Alves gets up and down that right flank at Barcelona. It’s like he’s playing two positions at the same time: Right back and right wing.

You can’t ignore strikers either. Players like Robbie Keane and Wayne Rooney could just stay up front and wait for the ball. They don’t have to run back and tackle, but they do anyway.

“Hardest working” is surprisingly hard to define. Is it just about how many blades of grass a player covers in 90 minutes? Could be. But that definition puts central defenders and goalkeepers at a definite disadvantage, because those players are required to maintain positional discipline and not go chasing around the field.

Maybe hardest working can refer to players who put the extra hours in in training. I know Alex Ferguson always used to rave about David Beckham staying on the training ground to perfect his free kicks, when everyone else has gone home.

Or maybe the hardest working players aren’t necessarily the big names. There are probably plenty of professional footballers who weren’t blessed with an abundance of natural talent, but have made a career for themselves through hard work.

So it’s a tough one. Which is why I’m turning it over to Offside readers: Who is the hardest working player in football?

daniele de rossi. never injured, never misses a game (except through red card), always plays for italy, has that crazy vein bulge in his neck and goes nuts when he scores
  • Ivica Olic. Just pure frenzy, not sure he knows where he's going half the time, but the dude just runs non-stop for 90.
  • I agree with all the Kuyt proponents. Tevez, though more out of stupidity than passion, would get a nod too.
  • ElJefecito
    Dirk Kuyt. No brainer.
  • Rino Gattuso, my hero and idol, for sure. SO much passion and desire and intensity. Just a non-stop wrecking machine.
  • Dirk Kuyt.

    1. Iaquinta he just never gives up he just runs and runs
    2. Kuyt he wins me over and gets my respect for the ammount of effort he excerts and he never gives up
    3. Gattuso Although he sucks but he keeps running like a bull he is a talentless but tireless player.

    Becks. .

It's no one but mikel essien

    definitely Dirk Kuyt
  • Kuyt

Spare a thought for wingers like taddei (back me up here chris!) who doesn't have that much natural talent but still he became a starter in the spalletti regime because of his work ethic.

    gotta be
  • Agragami, India
Its gonna be Kuyt and only Kuyt...:)
  • Bishwaksen
    gotta be Gattuso and Lampard
  • Drew
Both have been mentioned already, but J. Zanetti and Kuyt are pretty ridiculous.
  • Fwembt
Has to be Essien or Kuyt.
  • Muhammed
Lassana Diarra, who also may be the best all round player in the game today.
  • ish
essien. Throw him anywhere and he works his heart out for the team. Want an overlapping fullback? Essien does that. Box to box? check. Defensive Mid? Check. Hell central defender? check.

The bison is named that way because he works his arse off for the team. Rarely gets caught out of position and is everywhere on the pitch.
  • That's a pretty convincing argument MAD. Definitely minutes on the pitch and not missing games has to be a factor when discussing the hardest working player.
  • MAD
I would like to make a point here.

Javier Zanetti has missed one(1) game in three years.

He's also played over 3,000 minutes in 7 out of the last 8 seasons.

Oh yeah, he's doing all this as the most capped Argentine National team player ever.

That is the hardest working player in the world.
  • Diego Mario Buonanotte Rende, no doubt in my mind.

    The kid is bionic.

Also a kid named Edwin Cardona, U18 for Colombia a starter on my team Atletico Nacional

Aghem! http://cdanacional.theoffside.... ... time to sharpen that spanish up.
  • drea
    Dirk Kuyt.
  • Dirk Kuyt
  • Eduardo of Arsenal :) 100%
  • Lokesh
Roy Keane for sure. Box to box, plus he actually looks like he's working hard...mind and body. And the extra bit of yelling :P
  • In terms of hours spent practicing Puyol works harder than anyone I've heard of, and Pique covers the whole field even if he is a CB but I think the hardest working man in football (past and present) is Roy Keane. he was scary
  • cap123
    lampard
  • Rino Gattuso never stops running. And as I hate to say it as a Milan fan, but Javier Zanetti. The guy is a machine.
  • Bishop
I would say Seba Giovinco of Juvuentus! He is very young (20, 21?) and a ball of energy. Standing only 5'5'', he'll almost always be the smallest player on the pitch and makes up for it with his hustle.
  • Jacek
    Mutu or Bastian Sweinestieger
  • rosay
de rossi, rino gattuso, and iaquintsss r my top 3
  • rosay
    vinny iaquinta for sureee

    def gattuso or iaquinta

    Third vote for Ivica Olic.

every time I hear hard working the only people get on my mind are defensive midfielders ,too much football manager I suppose .

I think Gatusso is a hard worker he plays his heart out,if Effenberg is still playing I would have chosen him.
  • bob bradley
    Michael Bradley
    the stats show it. http://www.fifa.com/confederat...
  • pfelds
    Lampard

goal scorer, behind JThe is the clear leader of both chelsea and england, great passer, good defense skillz, goes all in all day, plus he takes corners, freekicks, penaltys, he does it all, for the full 90

    LIghts Out Lamps..
    enough said..........................
  • Flippy
Kuyt, Eto'o, Alves, Puyol, and Tevez
  • I've heard a lot of interviews about the man, and I think that it is Robbie Savage. I know that is surprising, but he wasn't the most gifted player around, yet he made it to the top. His old coaches/teammates agree.

And he has an IQ of 167.
  • Corey
Raul is as hard a worker as they come, not only for his constant running and commitment in games, but because he trains like a mad men every day of the year.
  • Mevlut Erding is a very hard worker as well.
  • Abidal.
  • BVB
    Ivica Olic-you will see...
    Together with Dirk Kuyt.
  • Adam
    Wayne Rooney, obviously.
  • I agree with amunt- Cahill is a guy who will play in any position and does amazing things no matter where he is. He's like the anti-Berbatov.

I also think DDR works hard- maybe a little too hard. He's a DM who loves to go forward but he also rushes back to cover the defense.
  • Kxevin
Pardon the Barca-centrism, but Eric Abidal or Dani Alves. Fully forward on the attack, fully back on defense, sideline to sideline in the case of Abidal.
  • Fernando
ALVARO "EL CHINO" RECOBA is the hardest working man in the PLANET my friend, if not check out the highlight reel... www.lacelesteblog.com
  • Alan
As a Scot, I'd find it hard to not include Kenny Miller on such a list. The man couldn't score if the goal was 100ft by 500ft, but he never stops running.

And as a Celtic fan I can attest to how hard Scott Brown and Scott MacDonald work. Always full of energy.
  • jamess
    puyol
    the guys a machine!
  • amunt valencia
phewww no big 4 names for me
there is only one name that comes to mind from the epl
tim cahill put him anywhere n he will perform with the same dedication n work rate irrespective

from la liga it would be abidal or marchena of yesteryears
    senna n sergio gonzalez too

    surprised noone threw out park

    esp mention-moutinho
  • manc.
hate him nowadays, but tevez gets the nod
  • Lord
Michael Essien FTW! Bison or Kuyt should win ;)
  • Matthew
An American who I have noticed lately who works harder than anyone I have seen in a while is Stuart Holden. Even though he doesn't always start for the USMNT, he puts everything into the time he is on the field. I really think Bradley should look closer at him instead of lazy players like Clark and play Holden who is a really hard worker!
  • Jan
    Ivica Olic
  • Geoff
As soon as I saw the title, I thought Kuyt.
  • Gabe
    Lorik Cana
  • Juan
    TEVEZ!!
  • rosay
easily vincenzo iaquinta, if anyone has ever seen him play for juve or the azzurri will obv kno he's the most hardworkinn
  • Dirk Kuyt wins by unanimous decision.
  • Good call. Kuyt puts in a real shift on the right wing, despite it not even being his proper position.

Maybe that's another way to define hardest working players too. Players who will play out of position without complaining and happily do a job for the team.
  • Jaffery
    Dirk Kuyt !!
