Soundoff: Who’s Your Favourite Number Nine?

By: Daryl | September 9th, 2009

It’s the 9th of September, 2009. One of those rare days when both sides of the Atlantic can agree on how to write the date: 09/09/09. So what better day to celebrate the number nine jersey?

The meaning of shirt numbers varies from culture to culture, but #9 is pretty universal. In any language it means “goalscorer”. Think (original) Ronaldo. Think Gabriel Batistuta. Think Steve Bull. Or is that last one just me?

So, we’re asking Offside readers: Who’s your favourite #9?

We’re not asking you to name the best #9 of all time. This isn’t a quest to decide who’s better than who. It’s more about hearing who everyone’s favourite #9 is (club or international) and – most importantly – why?

Nando Torres isn't "Liverpool number niiine" I think you'll find he's "Carragher's bit on the siiide"!

Anyway, Shearer by a country mile. For me number 9 means goal scoring centre forward and no-one sums that up better.

    Ronaldo, the real one!

fat ronaldo because two bum knees and an affinity for fried chicken and tranny prostitutes can't stop him from dribbling circles around everyone on the pitch and scoring most matches. you can't say he isn't entertaining.

definitely the original ronaldo.... i remember when i was a kid reading a story about the 18 year old wonder kid on the brasil squad during the build up to wc '94... even though he never played a minute in that wc, i rememeberd being in awe of someone so young yet so talented... i started following his career with what little resources i had at the time and when the 96 olympics came around i finally got to see him play... i was blown away....then i followed him to barca, inter, madrid, milan, etc... during his prime he was the most dominant player to arguably ever touch a football. the perfect blend of speed, strength, athleticism and technical ability. 'el fenomeno' could score with both feet, his head, his back to goal,on the run, in the air, beat defenders 1-on-1, provide when needed to, set pieces, pk's, etc... and the mark of any true goal scorer, all he needed was 1 chance... he was such a freak of nature that his knees could literally not hold him up. they said at the time his knees were not made to support someone of his size, strength, speed and movement. What could've been if it wasnt for the injuries... and he still dominated the world in wc 2002 after people had said his best days were long gone..

Ben i was referring to him winning the world cup or champions league. With all respect to the confed's cup, the copa america and super coppa etc. while all good acheivements nobody remembers who won every coppa italia.
The point i was making is that with all the scoring titles he won (which i agree with you about) no 'big' bought him to play in the champs league, and i do not consider roma a 'big' team.

kris boyd or pippo who are both utterly useless except for the happy knack of scoring bags of (usually ugly) goals

For me it's all about Batigol. I was a teenager in Argentina in the 90's, and watched Bati play from his early days with Boca Juniors. In his prime, the guy was lethal. And he was pretty likable, too, which always helps.

In response to Tony's comment, Batistuta won an Argentine league title with Boca Jrs, the Coppa Italia and Super Coppa with Fiorentina, and the Scudetto and Super Coppa with Roma. Playing for Argentina he won the Copa America twice ('91 and '93) and a Confederations Cup. Oh, and a truckload of scoring titles along the way. Not bad if you ask me.
