Did Spurs Get the Wrong Man from Sevilla?
By: Daryl | September 30th, 2008
Six games in to the season and Spurs boss Juande Ramos is under pressure. When Tottenham went looking to replace Martin Jol last season, Sevilla were doing well (they’d just won the UEFA Cup) and Juande Ramos looked like the perfect man for the job. The man who could bring some of that Seville magic to North London. And - depending on how you feel about the Carling Cup - he did, for a while.
But now Spurs are stuck to the bottom of the Premier League while Sevilla are doing just fine without him, still unbeaten after five games in La Liga. Ironically the Spanish team are in fourth place, which is exactly where Spurs wanted to be this season. So is it possible that Spurs got the wrong man from Sevilla?
The current head coach at Sevilla is Manuel Jiménez Jiménez, a guy who’s only previous experience was coaching the reserve team. But if you look a little higher in the Sevilla hierarchy you’ll find Sporting Director Ramon Rodriguez.
Rodriguez (left) seems to be the real architect of the current Sevilla team. It was under his (literal) direction that Seville signed players like Dani Alves for ridiculous bargain prices (£500,000 according to this) and brought the likes of José Antonio Reyes and Sergio Ramos through the youth system.
There’s already been plenty of talk from Spurs fans that the club should have hired Rodriguez to replace the none-too-popular Damien Comolli, and reformed the Ramos-Rodriguez dream team. But given Sevilla’s success so far this season, seems maybe Spurs should have offered the big money deal to Rodriguez instead of Ramos.

martin jol was fine. they were fools for ridding of him so fast despite his great success. however ramos likes to play more fluid football, not “pack the box and hope one goes in”. perhaps he’s a bit naive in terms of hoping to play his style in the premiere league, however ramos is not some muppet they got off the street. Levy and the tottenham board are the problem. they are truly “Jewish” in their stingy greed. But Jews are supposed to be smart, and see thigns long term, beyond the next 10 minutes. Levy risked destroying the club to save money and will probably do so again in the future to save $5.
That is literally what happened in their pursuit of Andrei Arshavin and their selling off of Dimitar Berbatov.
