Stadium Brawl In Swiss Cup Competition
By: chris | September 25th, 2008
When one thinks of stadium wide fights and riots, Switzerland isn’t exactly the first country which comes to mind. Especially not when it’s between two amateur clubs in the round of 64. But that’s what happened between Wacker Granges and FC Alle on Saturday, resulting in lots of fines, suspensions and the complete removal of both clubs from the Swiss Cup competition. Young Boys, top flight side, now get a bye, which is now just an actual bye rather than a formality.
Like so many before, this one started on the pitch, with Alle leading 3-1 in second half stoppage time at Wacker. A skirmish erupted, resulting in 3 red cards and a delay of 10 minutes before the real pandemonium ensued. Everyone got into it, even the directors of both teams, and the game had to be halted shortly thereafter.
Today the punishments came down and, along with the Swiss Cup ban, there were bonuses handed out as well:
Four Alle players and one from Wacker were suspended for between three and 10 matches and both clubs were ordered to pay 600 Swiss francs (£300) in fines and costs.
Boggles the mind, really. Amateur club stadium brawl in Switzerland? What’s next? Badminton throw downs in Luxembourg?
Wait, don’t mention Luxembourg. The Swiss are probably a bit touchy about that subject. Wouldn’t want to get them riled up again.

chris, this isnt so surprising…when i moved to zurich 4 years ago (actually the second day that i was here), i was living next to the stadium and there was a fc zurich v/s basel match that basel won - not only were there riots outside the stadium (very similar to what you would associate with in england) - the authorities had to get tear gas trucks and riot police with sticks and guards etc…
def not the welcome to the ‘world’s only neutral country’ we were expecting!!Posted from
Switzerland
