Stan Lazaridis banned for treating itchy scalp
By: Bob | August 27th, 2007
When former Australian international Stan Lazaridis first claimed that he had failed a drug test because the substance he was using to treat an itchy scalp was on the anti-doping black list, our bullshit meter went through the roof. It sounded too absurd to be true. It turns out that Lazaridis was correct. His itchy scalp medicine led to a failed drug test and to a pretty harsh punishment.
Lazaridis has been banned from football for 12 months not because the medicine he used to treat alopecia made him jump higher or kick the ball harder, but because he didn’t wait to get permission to use the drug in Australia. He had permission to use it in England.
‘The tribunal made certain express findings regarding Stan’s good character which FFA welcomes,’ FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said in a statement.
‘In particular, it found that Stan had not taken the prohibited substance to mask a performance enhancing drug, but for legitimate therapeutic purposes as prescribed by his doctor.
‘The problem related to the processes, which is why it is so important for all athletes to be vigilant.’
Fair enough, but even the most vigilant of athletes would likely have a hard time thinking that the crap you are putting in your hair is going to lead to a failed drug test. If that were the case than Cristiano Ronaldo would be facing a lifetime ban.
