Start filming your 9-year-old’s every move this very second

Don’t you hate it when the media hype machine kicks in over a player who is not old enough to drive and who more likely than not will end up in a career other than football? We would never do something like that in these parts. The young kid that is garnering the headlines the world over today is 9-year-old Rhain Davis who has signed with Manchester United’s youth academy.
That isn’t really all that big a deal. Manchester United and countless other clubs sign kids that young to join their academies every year. Why the Davis story has made the headlines is because there is accompanying video of him schooling a bunch of 10-year-olds in Australia where he has been raised. His grandfather sent a DVD to Manchester United who subsequently invited the lad for a tryout. The video has made its rounds around the Internet and has helped to spark the buzz.
What does this mean for all of us? It means that in ten years or so we may be watching Davis’ exploits on the football pitch or reading about his failed career in the very papers that are hyping him today. It also means that we will undoubtedly be seeing more and more Internet videos of young kids dominating youth games and more and more proclamations of the next big one.
Here is Davis’ video. He looks like a nice enough player. For an over-the-hill nine year old. I say that if they aren’t discovered by three they ain’t nothing.

This kid has moves. And he wants to be like Ronaldo, not Gerrard, not Rooney, not even Lamps. Imagine that.
