Steve McClaren Doesn’t Learn

By: Daryl | October 29th, 2008

Remember how we laughed at Steve McClaren and his weird decision to speak to Dutch interviewers as if English were his second language? Well, he’s still doing it.

If you want to emulate Steve McClaren, The Spoiler has a checklist of how it’s done.

Even better, Steve’s FC Twente goalkeeper Sander Boshker has decided to emulate Paul Robinson. Jump to the 4:00 mark on this video below to see a Robinson-vs-Croatia style swing and a miss howler, followed by an excellent non-Robinson-vs-Croatia recovery:

The fingertip save just seconds before the howler was pretty impressive too.

Usually I would give him the benifit of the doubt and say maybe he just picked up a ducth twang to his accent but the way he’s forming the words is exactly like he’s learned English second. Why? Has he been killed and replaced with a Dutch lookalike?

    That really isn’t so strange.

I live with someone from Japan. His English is decent but still pretty shaky. I find it easier to talk to him if I speak like he does, which is to speak like English is my second language.

So I think, being surrounded by people who’s second language is English he has picked up those kinds of mannerisms.

Got to agree with Scott. This interview is not as cringe-worthy as one of his first ones because he has toned down on the Dutch twang! However, I think we should all try and speak English with foreign people whose first language is not English and we might be surprised at how we start to speak slower and with much more emphasis.

“Bottle” is a good example. Say it like how i normally say it and its pronounced “bo ‘ull” with no t sound! Try saying it in a foreign country without being misunderstood…

Hahaha, that’s funny, not quite as embarrassing as the 1st time over but still. Embarrassing.
