Steve McClaren Says We’re Ruining Beckham
By: Laurie | January 22nd, 2008
According to former England coach Steve McClaren, MLS should feel guilty. Our crime? Ruining David Beckham for international play.
Apparently we are so sub-standard over here that he’ll soon be fit for nothing. Particularly not for England. Because, y’know, they’re so good. And because if someone’s skills decline, age has nothing to do with it. And because Becks has played so darn much over here that we’ve had ample opportunity to destroy his form.
“David has gone from Real Madrid to a club in America where the sport is still at its beginnings,” said the former Middlesbrough and England coach.
“The MLS is developing but it’s not of the standard required for international football. I know David will keep himself fit, but it’s going to be very difficult for him to continue playing for England.”
This would be the same Steve McClaren, you’ll remember, who this summer, while he was trying to save his job and mend fences with Becks, famously called MLS equivalent to “lower premiership, upper Championship.”
I would find this a whole lot more credible if McClaren hadn’t recently lost his job for being unable to make something of the England team.

Funny how when he was England manager, he rated MLS as lower premier/upper championship.

Last month this guy was being tarred and feathered and now he is being interviewed and quoted on a regular basis as if he’s an elder statesman?! What a joke, whatever he says.
(I was preparing to be outraged, but then media coverage of U.S. politics popped into my mind…)

McClaren is dumb. But Becks is a bit crap anyway.

“Ruining David Beckham for international play.” Says the man who ruined a whole nation. I think I rest my case.

He would say that – he aint England manager no more – funny once upon a time McClaren said he would help Becks play for England and get his 100th cap. How times change.
Now its down to Capello. We have everybody saying including JT (current England captain) let Becks have it for the Switzerland game and now Rio Ferdinand has said that he is up for the job if Capello decides to choose a completely different captain.
Watch out though. Keegan and Newcastle want Beckham!!!

however it’s true. MLS is the quality of mid-table Championship League and any European player will not be able to make the jump to international level after playing such a low level.
