Study: Watching Football in a Pub is a good thing

soccer-pub.jpgMuch credit to the researchers at the Canterbury Christchurch University. They somehow convinced somebody out there to fund them to do a study on why people enjoy watching football in a pub. Talk about a brilliant way to fund free pints while you watch football down at the local! There is still hope for me to get funding to “research” the effects of watching all 64 World Cup matches while subsisting solely on beer and chocolate. I promise to use color in my report and to make a fancy PowerPoint presentation if you fund me.

Anyway, the results of the study are far from startling. People like watching football while in a pub. In fact they like it almost as much, if not better, than watching it while in a stadium.

“The sports spectating experience is much less about the event and more about sharing the experience with other people,” said report author Professor Mike Weed. “Because the space is smaller the chants feel more intense and louder. Everybody is on the same side. People want to be involved in a celebratory atmosphere.”

Legitimate points, but don’t you think that people might also like watching football in a pub because they can spend their hard earned money on beer and booze instead of handing over their mortgage just to purchase a ticket? Nevertheless, I will be printing out a copy of this report and presenting it to my significant other as a Get Out of Jail card other the next time I get in trouble for heading down to the local pub instead of doing house work.
