Sunday League Backpassing With Bruno Alves…

By: Daryl | April 7th, 2009

Porto left Old Trafford with an excellent 2-2 draw, but it could have been even better if not for Bruno Alves’ 15th minute backpass/assist. With Porto leading 1-0 Alves casually stroked the ball back towards keeper Helton, obviously not seeing Wayne Rooney waiting to pounce.

Maybe it’s no co-incidence that backpasses weren’t included on Bruno Alves’ Star Skills Defending video for UEFA last year:

Strange thing is that Rooney seemed to expect the comedy backpass. How else to explain the fact that he continued his run even while Porto had the ball. So credit the Man Utd striker for his clairvoyance, but wag of the finger to Alves for a pass that would get you yelled at in even the Sundayest of Sunday pub leagues.

Might have cost Porto the ticket to the semi-final. But I pray for them to succeed anyway! Kick out ManUtd please :)

    Absolute disgrace.
  • And, because I know everybody is now wondering how this story ends:

The little angel on my shoulder is looking out for me. I can't get the video to run for more than two seconds.
  • That one hurt me to watch the first time around -- I'm not going to watch it again.

(Excapt that I probably am. I have NO self-control.)
