Sunderland (and a Beach Ball) Pile More Hurt on Liverpool

By: Laurie | October 17th, 2009

Poor Liverpool. They just can’t catch a break this year. Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are injured, and a couple of weeks ago they were already approaching the maximum number of losses any team in the Premier League in the past few years has suffered while still managing to win the league.

And today they added another one. With the help of a beach ball.

Yes, a definite assist by a large, red beach ball which had floated down onto the pitch and was just lying there in front of Pepe Reina’s goal.

Reina seemed to have things covered when Sunderland’s Darren Bent took the shot, but then the beach ball intervened and caused just enough deflection/distraction to send the ball into the net. And the goal was allowed to stand.

If I were Rafa, I’d be checking to make sure none of my players has had a recent dalliance with Paris Hilton.

(P.S. As Ed points out on Liverpool Offside, yes, that is the Liverpool crest on the ball. Oh, irony, you are a cruel mistress.)

    Aw, shucks, Johnny.

Yes, it’s me. Real life pulled me in another direction over the summer, but I missed you guys too much and couldn’t stay away. I’ll be stopping by about once a month or so to do weekend duty.

(And it’s good to be back.) :-D

Sunderland ‘beach ball goal’ should have been disallowed says referee

May be Blatter was right when he said we don’t need Professional Refs and NOT Instant Video Replays.

The last sentence is supposed to read:
