SuperLiga Final: LA Galaxy v Pachuca
By: Bob | August 29th, 2007
The final chapter of the inaugural SuperLiga will be written on Wednesday evening when the LA Galaxy play host to Pachuca at the Home Depot Center. To the victor goes a $1 million prize and a shiny trophy. To the loser goes the thrill of playing in a half empty stadium in a game that can only be watched on Spanish language television or the Web. Since we all want the SuperLiga to become an international phenomenon, right?, it is our duty to swivel in excitement in our computer chairs in anticipation of this contest. Commence swiveling.
The final features a rematch of an early SuperLiga match where the Galaxy defeated their Mexican foes 2-1 on July 24. Those were simpler times before half of LA’s team was injured, Pachuca had kicked off their Mexican League season, and David Beckham saved American soccer from whatever it is it needed to be saved from. Alan Gordon and Landon Donovan scored for the MLSers, while Rafael Marquez Lugo notched the goal for Pachuca. It was an uneven, yet mildly exciting, game.
Flash forward five weeks and we see a Galaxy side that is limping into the game with seven first team player banged up. They’ve lost three straight league games and have done so in rather horrific fashion. Meanwhile, Pacucha started their campaign with three straight wins before losing to Club Santos Laguna on Saturday.
A few things to watch for while you ignore the dizziness caused by swiveling in excitement in your computer chair.
1. Jose Francisco Torres – A dual citizen who was born in Longview, Texas, the midfielder made his debut for Pachuca last November and has worked his way into the startling line-up. He’s only 19 and the kid has some talent. As more Mexican-Americans grow up playing soccer in the US it will be fascinating to see whether they choose to play in MLS or if they take Torres’ route and play in Mexico. And if they do play in Mexico will they ever get a call up for the US National team?
2. The ankle – First he wasn’t expected to play but now he is. David Beckham’s gimpy ankle is apparently good enough to allow him to earn minutes. Even if it weren’t he’d probably still play. His coach is desperate and this is the only prize the Galaxy will be playing for this season. Landon Donovan also will be on the pitch.
3. The Buzz – Maybe it is because the game isn’t being shown on ESPN or Fox Soccer Channel or maybe it is because no one other than a few lonely bloggers give a rat’s ass about this competition, but it seems like there isn’t much in the way of pre-match coverage. Keep an eye on the headlines after it is over. If Beckham does anything it will generate some pub., but will the game itself? And will MLS proclaim the inaugural tournament a success?

My expert prediction: Pachua rolls over Galaxy 3-0. Galaxy will finish the game with less than 11.

Naively Optimistic: Galaxy 2 - Pachuca 1 (Beckham 2 Assists)
Why the heck do I have to watch this on my computer! Rediculous!

2-1 Pachuca. The Gals face too many injuries and they are the inferior team.

Anyone know what SuperLiga viewership is like in Mexico?

Rant: While I would prefer every soccer game on the planet to be televised on ESPN or ESPN2, I’m just glad it’s available to everyone on the net. To me that’s better than being on a spanish channel I don’t get (I do have Univision though) or some premium channel like HDnet (seriously who has HDnet? and even if you do what make games exclusive to it?). Maybe I just have a good connection, but if it’s on the net, anyone can watch it. You don’t have as much control over what television channels you receive from your cable company.

Ready for this? I have HDnet and I STILL can’t watch the game tonight. Anyone willing to liveComment the game on this post ; )

It looks like I’ll have to travel to a local pub to watch the Superliga final tonight. What the hell! Not even Pay-Per-View care to carry it! I live in Los Angeles, and can’t even watch our home team on Pay-Per-View?! It is outrageous. Why do they bother to show stupid Poker Tournaments, but not MLS/Galaxy matches on TV?! We should all protest!

I guess I’ll volunteer to give you live comment on the game. I’ll give it a shot…not sure how well I can do but I’ll try!

So here we go…there’s definitely energy at the Home Depot…tons of chanting by the fans. With 2:30 minutes into the game, the Galaxy is busy pushing Pachuca and Pachuca taking advantage of how the Galaxy’s defense is not as solid as it should be.
Beckahm, Donovan and Xavier are all back and starting.

Seems to me that the $1 million has really motivated Pachuca. They have had the ball quite a bit with one opportunity that almost became their first goal.
Galaxy is having their share of the ball but no real scoring opportunities just yet. Pavon had one, tried a bycicle kick that didn’t work.

Jimenez was close again…nice kick, just over Cannon’s goal. This is the second chance that Pachuca gets that close and they keep trying on Cannon’s right side.

I was barely posting the previous comment and here comes the goal. Cannon was ready to kill Vagenas for pushing the ball in off of Jimenez kick. Although, if it wasn’t Vagenas, it would have been the other Pachuca’s palyer right behind him.

Darn it…Beckham is down. The Pachuca player hits the ball at the same time as Beckham and he goes down. He is up now but they have requested the change. It looks like Cobi or Buddle will come in to replace Beckham.

I am about to scream here. Gordon just missed one of the best opportunities that the Galaxy had for an equalizer. Galaxy has been on top of Pachuca in the second half and had dominated but still no goal.

Oh my gosh! I am still in shock…at the 93rd minute, Gordon scores a gorgeous bicycle kick goal that left Pachuca frozen for a few seconds.
On to overtime we go…

What a shame 14,500 people didn’t get the chance to see Klein score that goal. That was a real good 2nd half and I’m loving watching two former Timbers (Randolph and Gordon) play well for LA
“Peter Vagenas owes Chris Klein some adult beverages right now,” says the tipsy announcer.

My bad. You are right Lucas…I was so excited by the goal that when Telefutura put Gordon’t name as scorign the goal, I didn’t even bother to look. Beautiful goal anyway!

MLSNet’s match tracker had Gordon too.

How did Xavier missed that penalty kick? What was he thinking? He hit it with the side of his boot…odd.
