Take it to the Bank. Cristiano Ronaldo is Player of the Year
By: Bob | April 16th, 2007
Gosh, it doesn’t seem that long ago that the English Premier League season was just starting and already it is time to begin the end of the season award talk. Time flies when you are watching Manchester United and Chelsea win everything. The PFA Premiership Player of the Year shortlist was released today and it comes as no surprise that four out of the six players are from the top two teams. It also comes as no surprise that the other two players and from the other top teams, although some can and have argued that Cesc Fabregas might not be worthy of being on the list. Dimitar Berbatov, anyone?
The way I see it, and my eyes are similar to just about anyone else handicapping the award race, there are two horses in this field: Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo. Drogba has been a stud this season while becoming the first Chelsea player to score 30 goals in a season since the Ronald Reagan/Margaret Thatcher era. Ronaldo has been nothing short of consistently superb all season, scoring 21 goals and setting up a bundle more while his team wins everything in sight (or at least gets to the point where they play Chelsea for the right to win everything in sight).
Both are worthy of the award, but I give the edge to Ronaldo for being the slightly more dominant player. I expect that he will be the one who gets the individual trophy to go along with all that cash he has to carry to the bank. Your pick?
