That Didn’t Take Long: Adriano Returns.
By: chris | May 1st, 2009
You’re shocked, I know.
Adriano has come to realize the sunset years aren’t quite what they were built up to be and he will now dust of the kit and doff a shiny new pair of boots in his return to professional football. A whole three weeks after “retiring”.
This amount of retirement indecision puts even boxers and Brett Favre to shame.
Flamengo’s suits are understandably chuffed to bits over this. Not only will they add a premier talent – albeit one who may show up inebriated to most games – but in doing so they’ll be able to plaster Flamengo logos all over the place.
“He is 99 per cent a Flamengo player. We have to look for a partner to help with the budget. Adriano knows about everything, so does his agent, and we are awaiting his presence at Gavea (the club’s headquarters).”
“We’re talking to the future sponsor of the club and the future kit supplier. I think Adriano will strengthen the Flamengo brand and help us in our contract with the sponsor.”
Is it too soon to start writing jokes about the potential partner? (Prozac? Brahma? A local brothel? The possibilities are endless.)
His agent says…
“The romance has begun but we cannot yet present any details.”
Flamengo being the club where Adriano’s career began, spending one season there in the professional ranks before touring the north of Italy. So it’s reinvigorated romance after cutting ties all of one week ago. Smacks of breaking up with a current girlfriend and heading immediately back to the ex, doesn’t it?
Adriano may be depressed and he may be homesick, prompting legitimate worry from those in the Inter camp at the time, but you get the feeling this is mostly the case of an athlete unhappy in his former situation who forces himself out of his contract. Not so much his return to Brazil – that much was expected – but the timing of it all. Three weeks is no ‘retirement’.
