The 10 Biggest Football Stadiums in the World

By: Daryl | March 4th, 2009

Got to love this video. No flashy effects, freeze frames or replays. Just Google Earth zooming in and the out of the world’s 10 biggest soccer stadiums, and “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers on the soundtrack.

The most interesting thing is that these stadiums aren’t necessarily the ones you know. Watch the vid to find out where the biggest stadium in the world is located, and we’ve got them listed after the jump:

10. Wembley Stadium – 90,000 – London, England
9. Estádio do Maracanã – 92,000 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
8. Camp Nou – 98-934 – Barcelona, Spain
7. Azadi Stadium – 100,000 – Tehran, Iran
6. Gelora Bung Karno – 100,000 – Jakarta, Indonesia
5. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium – 100,000 – Delhi, India
4. Bukit Jalil National Stadium – 110,000 – Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
3. Estadio Azteca – 114,463 – Mexico City, Mexico
2. Salt Lake Stadium – 120,000 – Bidhannagar, Kolkata, India
1. Rŭngrado May Day Stadium – 150,000 – Pyongyang, North Korea

The Rose Bowl in Pasadena seats over 90,000 and has hosted both the Men’s and Women’s World Cup Final, yet doesn’t make the list.

Beau – to be fair, what proportion of Rose Bowl events are (round) football related? Pretty small number – the rest of these host football as a primary sport.

Awesome video. Forgive an over-40 Yank, but what is the song and who is the group?
By the way, what about the huge stadium in Berlin where Hitler staged the ‘36 Olympics. Or was that pulzerized in WW II?

Peter – That’s Scotland’s own The Proclaimers, and the song is “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”.

Can you make it so the video doesn’t start playing automatically? Thanks.

Cool to know I’m just a couple of hours away from two of the world’s biggest football stadiums. Always knew they were big, but didn’t know they were top 10.

Another thought – they all look the same from the air, except for the N Korean one which actually looks pretty interesting – what can I say. Such a strange country.

I can’t even imagine going to a match with 149,999 other people.

Wow, two of our stadiums feature in the list. But Indian football is in such a sorry state.

It is amazing to see these types of lists and they always list the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang. It does not host any soccer games. The national team does not even play their games there.
