The 8 Second Red Card

By: chris | July 13th, 2009

Ze Carlos set a highly dubious record this weekend in Brazil, getting sent off despite being only the third person to touch the ball after the opening kickoff – 8 seconds for the foul, 15 seconds for the card – for an errant elbow…or two.

ZC claims he didn’t intentionally hit Renan, rather he slipped, but video replay shows some impressive defending by Renan couldn’t deny Ze’s persistence. One flailing arm was blocked by Renan, which probably could’ve been categorized an “accident”, but the second errant limb landed. Twice is not nice – immediate expulsion.

I heard (on the offside somewhere) that a player got sent off in 2 seconds because he was standing right by the ref as he blew the whistle and said “F*** that was loud!”.
