The Beckhams’ Telelvision Numbers: Posh 4.9 million, David 1.47 million

kill-your-tv.JPGI know that comparing ratings between shows on network television and cable isn’t fair and that comparing a sporting event to reality television isn’t fair either, but I do think it is interesting to have a look at the final ratings numbers for Mr. and Mrs. Beckham.

The one who gets paid to kick a ball helped to draw the largest ratings ever on ESPN for a game involving a Major League Soccer team. About 1.47 million people tuned in to see David Beckham play 12 minutes for the Los Angeles Galaxy against Chelsea on Saturday.

Earlier in the week the American television audience was treated to Victoria Beckham’s Coming to America special (for lack of a more appropriate word). Close to 4.9 million suckers people spent an hour learning that Posh is unbearable to watch.

Perhaps MLS signed the wrong Beckham…or perhaps the US government needs to start implementing mandatory lobotomies starting with those 4.9 million people.

Just cable vs network. 4.9 on network primetime during the summer is about average (well, it was NBC so maybe its slightly above average). If this was fall winter or spring that would be cancellation territory. 1.47 on cable however is very good, profitable and attractive to advertisers. It's also much better than even MLS cup tends to do. I would also guess that more of those viewers will return for similar programs than the Victoria people.

Which just goes to show you, in my opinion, that Beckham coming to America had more to do with his wife than with his career. Could prove to be a bad move.
