The Best Backheel Goals
By: Bob | July 18th, 2007Perhaps the only things cheekier than those cheeky lob goals are good old fashioned backheel goals. The video above purports to have the top 10 backheel goals in history, but we can all think of a few that probably should be on the list too. I’m thinking of one scored by Thierry Henry against Charlton, the one Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted against Italy and the one I scored in an indoor match in 1993. The keeper never had a chance. I haven’t scored a goal since.

No, no, no. Didn’t we go over this last week? You must ALWAYS use the word “cheeky” whenever you use the word “backheel”! Any other usage violates soccer blogging law.

I’m talking about the headline, obviously. I see you follow the law with a vengeance in the actual post.

The game is tied 1-1 in the 77th minute. Timber Jim is on the dugout with his recently orphaned granddaughter Keianna, leading the Timbers Army in “You Are My Sunshine” for the first time, and this happens:

Timbers win, go top of the table, and a mythology is born. The quality of the goal is not as high as the ones in that video, and the goal scorer, Fadi Afash, may be in prison right now for swindling two old people out of $125K (http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/steve_duin/index.ssf?base/news/116926351026560.xml&coll=7), but this gets my vote as most amazing backheel goal ever.
