The Best Of: Football’s Extracurriculars
By: chris | November 23rd, 2007
Everybody loves a good fight. Sure it’s unprofessional. Sure it typically ruins the remainder of the game. But come on, there’s nothing like going to a footy match and getting a twofer as a boxing match breaks out – especially with the prices of fights these days, those guys are making out like bandits. From all of this was born a YouTuber video set to a teenage-angst-filled soundtrack, along with a few tackles which have been timed with a sun-dial and some of the legs they break. Great stuff. A few of my favorite moments:
• Right in the beginning the fight between Luis Fabiano and Carlos Diogo. Carlos throws what is one of the better punches I’ve ever seen on the pitch but then both begin using the historic boxing technique known as “The Slapping Windmill”, which has won many a world title. Classic stuff.
• Kieron Dyer v Lee Bowyer. I can’t imagine there must have been anything more confusing to the Aston Villa players on the pitch who got all excited about a fight and then realized it was two Newcastle players. Seriously, who does that?
• The fight from phunk.dk where the two guys trade bitch slaps, you think it’s over…and then the retaliator comes back in the picture with a swinging forearm. Which then turns into a brawl of massive proportions with some guy in a suit waving in the cavalry like there some sort of cage over on the sidelines housing a bunch of raving lunatics ready for just this occasion. At least we hope.
• Carlos Puyol: DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!?!?!?
And Marco Materazzi deserved that headbutt and then some. Of course, if you’re a fan of Serie A, you’ve know this all along and probably at one point wanted to shoot him.
(If you have a bit of a weak stomach, watching legs get broken in half probably isn’t for you.)

My personal favorite is Mellberg v. Ljungberg, if only because Freddie more than holds his own despite the size difference. He’s like a fierce kitten.
