The Birmingham City Gypsy Curse is Lifted
By: Bob | December 26th, 2006
Birmingham has not been the most successful of clubs in England, but all of that is about to change. The English Championship league side has played the past 100 years while being under the spell of a gypsy curse. As the legend goes, the club moved into its digs at St Andrews a century ago, building the stadium on land that was being used by the Romany community. After they were forced to move, the angry gypsies put an 100-year hex on the stadium.
Throughout the years many a City manager would try to remove the curse with little success.
Former manager Ron Saunders tried to banish the curse in the 1980s by put ting crucifixes on floodlights and painting the bottom of his players’ boots red.
Barry Fry, in charge from 1993 to 1996, urinated in all four corners of the pitch after a clairvoyant said it would break the spell.
As luck would have it, the curse expires today.
“The gypsy curse is lifted on Boxing Day as it’s 100 years,” said Birmingham City Boss Steve Bruce
“Hopefully we can celebrate with another victory because we probably need 13 more wins to go back up automatically.
“It’s a fantastic club considering we’ve won nothing and it will be great to celebrate 100 years.”
How did the Championship side leaders fare in their first post-curse match?
They defeated QPR 2-1. Look out world, here they come.
