The Call for Restrictions on Foreigners in Club Football Grows

By: Bob | November 7th, 2006

franz_beckenbauer_o_194676c.jpgThe one and only Franz Beckenbauer has joined the list of people who think that proposals to force club teams to field at least six home national players at any one time is a way to improve club football.

“FIFA and UEFA have certainly recognised the problem and I support the plan to introduce the 6+5 rule where six homegrown players are in from the start,” Beckenbauer said in his column with Bild newspaper on Tuesday. “I hope EU legislation does not stop football from implementing this necessary step.”

I respect the Kaiser a lot and will forever be jealous of his World Cup experience this past summer, but I don’t happen to think that restricting the number of foreign-born players is a necessary step at all.

In my opinion, the internationalization of football has been good for club football. It has injected new talent into the top leagues and raised the level of play. It has made the game global and has raised interest for the sport in all corners of the globe.

Moreover, I don’t think the limiting of foreign players will address what Beckenbauer and others see as the biggest problem, too much movement of players from one club to another. It might prevent some players from jumping from Serie A to La Liga, for example, but it wouldn’t stop players like Ashley Cole from leaving Arsenal for Chelsea. Player movement is inevitable in this day and age as it was when Beckenbauer left Germany to take the cash to play in the United States.

If football federations are really concerned about the opportunities that are available for domestic-born players, they should pour money into developing young players so that they can compete for roster spots with players from other countries. This is an issue that should be decided on the pitch, not in the legislatures.

What do you think? Should there be restrictions on the number of foreign-born players a team can have?

Completely agree that this idea is rubbish. It is bad enough having to watch England players play for England in the World Cup :-)

This idea is absurd. More foreign players has opened numerous global markets to this beautiful game. Personally I am not surprised by Beckenbauer approving this ridiculous idea.

Small restrictions have already been put in place, like the four home grown players that have to be included in the squad for the Champions League, and they are hopefully going to implement this on domestic leagues. Before the 2007-8 season the Uefa President Lennart Johnasson wants to have 8 home-grown players and 4 of which have been trained by the clubs academy for at least 3 seasons. This would help the problem but would not solve it because these players who have been registered could still end up in the reserves and the foreign players could still be used, because as it stands in the Premier League you can register a very large amount of players.

    Sir,
I want to play in your club. Really believe me I am a best player. Many people say that my play like as ‘ZIDANE’. Many premier division football club very interested to me, but I don’t response them, because I want to play in a foreign club. I need a right opportunity to be the best football player as like the famous football players of the world. I am sure that If I get this opportunity then I can make myself as a famous player but there is no facility in our country for a football player. Our country is too small that it is not famous for the football players. There is no communication the football club of the foreign country. Don’t worry about me that I am not a best football player. I need just a right opportunity for that I can bring more reword for your club and improve in my life. So I will hope that you will give the right opportunity and oblige there by. I can send my cv(resume) and international passport photograph.
