The Call for Restrictions on Foreigners in Club Football Grows
By: Bob | November 7th, 2006
The one and only Franz Beckenbauer has joined the list of people who think that proposals to force club teams to field at least six home national players at any one time is a way to improve club football.
“FIFA and UEFA have certainly recognised the problem and I support the plan to introduce the 6+5 rule where six homegrown players are in from the start,” Beckenbauer said in his column with Bild newspaper on Tuesday. “I hope EU legislation does not stop football from implementing this necessary step.”
I respect the Kaiser a lot and will forever be jealous of his World Cup experience this past summer, but I don’t happen to think that restricting the number of foreign-born players is a necessary step at all.
In my opinion, the internationalization of football has been good for club football. It has injected new talent into the top leagues and raised the level of play. It has made the game global and has raised interest for the sport in all corners of the globe.
Moreover, I don’t think the limiting of foreign players will address what Beckenbauer and others see as the biggest problem, too much movement of players from one club to another. It might prevent some players from jumping from Serie A to La Liga, for example, but it wouldn’t stop players like Ashley Cole from leaving Arsenal for Chelsea. Player movement is inevitable in this day and age as it was when Beckenbauer left Germany to take the cash to play in the United States.
If football federations are really concerned about the opportunities that are available for domestic-born players, they should pour money into developing young players so that they can compete for roster spots with players from other countries. This is an issue that should be decided on the pitch, not in the legislatures.
What do you think? Should there be restrictions on the number of foreign-born players a team can have?
