The Champions League (of Oceania) is Decided
By: Ian Rose | May 11th, 2008
It’s a good day for Uniteds. For the second time in their history, Waitakere United of New Zealand have won the Oceanic Football Confederation Champions League, the top club competition for the seven countries that remain in the post-Australia OFC. It’s the smallest by far of the six FIFA confederations, but the win still qualifies Waitakere for a spot in the 2008 Club World Cup, where they will play the champions of the J League in the opening play-in match.
After an undefeated group stage, the eventual champions were tested in the first leg of the final by Kossa FC from the Solomon Islands, who were making their first Champions League appearance. The first leg ended in a win for Kossa, 3-1, in front of 20,000 fans in the Solomons. The return leg in Waitakere City, though was quite a different affair. Former Barnsley striker Allan Pearce scored a brace, and goals were added from soon-to-be Portland Timber Benjamin Totori, as well as two other scorers. The final, on aggregate, was 6-3 to Waitakere.
On this day of title celebrations, congratulations to the new champions of Oceania. They’ll be hoping to repeat the confederation’s best performance ever in a Club World Cup, when Sydney FC beat Egypt’s Al-Alhy in the 2005 edition, the only time an Oceanic team has won a CWC match.
