The Fugees Soccer Story to become a Movie
By: Bob | January 24th, 2007
If you haven’t read the story that appeared in the New York Times on Sunday about a youth team of refugees in Georgia called The Fugees do yourself a favor and read it (free subscription required). The story is one of hope and heartache, and it exposes the cultural challenges that exist in this mixed up, mumbled up multi-cultural world of ours where kids can be banned from playing soccer in the park just because they and the sport they love are different.
I could tell the story had an impact on people just by watching how quickly it spread around the blogosphere. The Fugees’ story is poised to receive a much larger audience now that Universal has bought the rights and plans on turning it into a book and a movie. The coolest part about all of this is that as part of the deal Universal has agreed to pony up $500,000 to build a soccer field for the kids.

What a story! Thanks for posting it here, Bob.
Some things just never change. “Different” carries different messages to different people – 100 years ago, 50 years ago and today – good and not so good. The Fugees have overcome! Their message will be told to a wide audience. We can always, always use more stories of inspiration.
Did I thank you for posting this, Bob?

The movie will probably be over the top sappy but I’ll still watch it. Great story and great news about the field.

I hope it’s not too sappy like Edward notes – but this is great to see. Can’t wait to see the end result.

I was wondering if you had heard where one could help the team. I know Universal is giving for the fie, lld, but I was hoping to get in touch to see what else they may need.
thanks
