The Game Of Their Lives: Alcorcon 4 – Real Madrid 0.

By: chris | October 27th, 2009

Be honest, you didn’t give the early Copa del Rey round a second thought. Why bother? The juggernauts and quasi-big teams alike would dispatch of the small teams early and the likes of ‘underdog’ would be bestowed upon Real Betis, or some other amply funded disappointment. For god’s sake even Atletico Madrid won their game! Real Union’s tear-jerking win over Real Madrid last year would not, could not be repeated.

And then it happened: one…two…three…four. With four swift hacks the great Real Madrid, the club of the 20th century, were dealt yet another crippling blow by a third division side, sent back to the second leg at the Bernabeu down four goals with nary an away goal in their pocket.

Perhaps the most stinging damnation came in the form of the postmatch review and the anointing of MOTM.

It was 4-0 eight minutes into the second half and Madrid were grateful the scoreline was not even more embarrassing: the home side hit the post and wasted a series of chances, while Dudek was Madrid’s outstanding performer.

For Real Madrid, absolute humiliation. For us, proof that money means little. For Alcorcon, the game of their lives. Bravo.

you might want to see if you can find a different video of the highlights. this video shows 4 goals – the first goal, the second goal, the third goal, and then the second goal again instead of the fourth.

great result tho! this is why they play the games instead of just letting the big clubs through.

Great article Chris! Refreshing piece of writing… in truth, what else can one say when faced with such an outcome against rank minnows?

chris money isn’t everything but you act like real madrid is some club who never had success before and tried to buy their way into it like chelsea or man city this team has won more trophies than any other european team , it has gone throught a bad cycle as of late and tried to get its prestige back by buying players who could help them do so
Anyways props to alcorcon they totally deserved their win and disgraceful performance on madrid’s part

Alcorcon is actually just outside of Madrid and connected (along with Getafe) on the Madrid Metro, so I bet they were even more excited about beating the big bad Real Madrid. What’s most surprising is Real wasn’t playing a terrible squad, either.

Raul still is missing that cup and it looks like he’ll keep missing it…

“it has gone throught a bad cycle as of late and tried to get its prestige back by buying players who could help them do so”

Exactly. Real Madrid has tried to buy back its success, not by wisely seeking players with potential and building them, or by developing its own youth, but largely by buying established stars.

Alcorcon have been a refreshing reminder that these trophies that we fans value so much can’t be bought, but in the end must be earned on the pitch. That is why this is a celebration of football and a statement against the cynical *business* of football.

Always love an incredible underdog story. Especially viewed by a crowd, in person, of only approx. 3,000.

I pray it doesn’t become revealed as a fixed send up, a la Richard Henne, Science Detective.

Ah this is a traditional football fans’ heaven. Well done Alcoron, I hope they hold on to this lead and go through.

I also hope they go through but madrid could still come back and win 8-0 at home.

This upset is upsetting but not surprising – the third division in Spain is still a pretty high level of soccer, much better than, say, the fourth division. And TWICE as good as the fifth division

You can’t forget my Basque brothers from Real Union, and the performance they put in during last year’s Copa: http://momento24.com/en/2009/10/28/aftermath-of-real-madrids-historic-defeat/
