The Greatest Goal Debate
By: Bob | May 11th, 2007
Growing up as a small boy, it was always one of my dreams that some day I would be featured in a highbrow publication like The Sun. I always envisioned a story about me hooking up with a Page 3 girl or at the very least an EXCLUSIVE story about getting into a club fight with a footballer. Those things may still yet happen, but today The Offside lost its Sun virginity.
Our new favorite tabloid has an excellent piece of journalism about the Andres Vasquez rabona goal I posted earlier this week, asking whether it is the greatest goal ever.
I’m of the opinion that it was a splendid goal, but one that can’t be labeled the greatest. In fact, The Sun goes on to list 10 additional goals that could be called the greatest. Of the ones below, I would rank my top five as 1. Maradona 2. Messi 3. George Weah 4. Pele 5. Carlo Alberto.
There are a lot of great goals not on this list, of course. Vasquez’s might be on of the ten best ever, but the best? I don’t think so. What do you think?
CARLOS ALBERTO, Brazil v Italy, 1970 World Cup
DAVID BECKHAM, Manchester United v Wimbledon, Premiership, 1996
DIEGO MARADONA, Argentina v England, 1986 World Cup
LIONEL MESSI, Barcelona v Getafe, Spanish Cup, 2007
MICHAEL OWEN, England v Argentina, 1998 World Cup
PELE, Brazil v Sweden, 1958 World Cup
RICKY VILLA, Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City, FA Cup, 1981
GEORGE WEAH, AC Milan v Verona, Serie A, 1996
ARCHIE GEMMILL, Scotland v Holland, 1978 World Cup
