The High Cost of being a WAG
By: Bob | November 15th, 2006
I’ll admit that I was largely ambivalent about the Wives and Girlfriends (WAGs) phenomenon at this year’s World Cup. Every time they showed pictures of the women in the stands I felt compelled to hold a Live Aid type of concert to raise money to fill their anemic bodies with high calorie milkshakes. I’m even less interested in the WAGs now that I have taken a test put together by Virgin Money (clearly they are doing God’s work) to determine the likelihood that I could end up a WAG. I ended up scoring so low that it is likely I’d need to pay a Conference player just to talk to me. In other words, the test was very accurate.
Not satisfied with just putting together a WAG eligibility Web site, Virgin Money has also come up with the estimated costs of being a WAG.
It will cost aspiring footballers’ wives an initial investment of £28,815 to win their perfect match and then a spend of £21,855 in year-one of the relationship, to keep their footballer from playing away. The elements identified by Virgin Money to make up the initial investment are:
- The obligatory boob job - £5,750
- Designer wardrobe - £7,050
- Body conditioning - £9,360
- Being seen in the correct places - £2,480
- Makeover - £1,465
- Accessories - £2,710Ongoing expenses in the first year (at least) to keep the WAGs at the top of their games, according to Virgin Money, will be:
- Hair care - £6,120 a year
- Gym membership/personal trainer - £5,460 a year
- Nails - £650 per year
- Tan - £1,820 a year
- Clothes - at least £6,740 per year
- Alcohol - £490 per year
- Trendy club membership - £575 a yearFor those WAGs willing to set their sights a little lower, Virgin Money estimates that a Championship player’s heart can be won over for £31,400, a League 1 player for £15,250 and a League 2 player for £5,140. Right at the other end of the spectrum, girls can bag a typical non-League Conference player for somewhere in the region of £512, the research from Virgin Money concludes.
I think I lost at least 20 IQ points posting this.

I’m not sure which is worse. The fact I actually took the WAG test or the fact I scored pretty high on it. I need to find a new job

I’m not ashamed to say, I love all the WAG nonsense. The bling! The fake tans! They’re like very shiny trainwrecks waiting to happen!

I have to disagree with the cost estimates. Any wannabe WAG worth her salt should be able to get her chosen hoofer to pick up her expenses within the first six months - which, I would have thought, is the point of becoming a WAG to begin with.
