The Legend of Ferenc Puskas
By: Bob | November 16th, 2006
It is pretty easy to criticize modern football for being too corporate, too conservative, and any number of other things. I agree with some of the criticisms of the modern game, but I also consider myself to be lucky to have a chance to watch great players from around the world. There was a time not so long ago when you could only read about the great players and if you were lucky you would get the opportunity to see them play once every four years at the World Cup.
The Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas was a player well before my time, but that doesn’t mean I don’t admire him. His record speaks for itself. He scored 83 goals in 84 matches for Hungary between 1945 to 1956, a time when the Mighty Magyars were one of the top teams in the world, winning the gold at the 1952 Olympics and becoming the first team to beat England on its home soil.
He went on to score 512 goals in 528 matches for Real Madrid, which is a remarkable achievement no matter the era.
The 79-year-old Puskas is in critical condition and fighting for his life today in a hospital in Budapest. Below is a brief example of his football genius and you can also check out a longer video in Spanish about his playing career.

The 79-year-old Puskas is in critical condition and fighting for his life today in a hospital in Bucharest.
This is an incorrect fact. Ferenc Puskas is at Kútvölgyi St. Hospital in Budapest. NOT in BUCAREST
In any case he had passed away today on 17.nov 2006.
