The Mythical Micanski ‘Maradona Goal’
By: chris | April 20th, 2010
The problem with unseen legend is the lack of fact often forces something, a goal in this case, to take on a life of its own in order to give it the justice video evidence cannot. This was suspected to be the case with the mythical ‘Maradona goal’ of Iliyan Micanski, the Bulgarian currently tearing up the Polish Ekstraklasa, which spawned continental notice and dubbed Micanski the Lubin Maradona, but no viral. And really, it can’t be good if it doesn’t have a viral nowadays, can it?
There’d be a number of articles which referenced the goal, but none which had anything but the finish. It took a few weeks, lots of frustrations and some fruitless searching in the dustiest corners of the intertubes, but it has been found. (Apparently a couple weeks late at that.)
It’s most certainly good, but it’s far more Messi v Zaragoza than Maradona v England or Messi v Getafe. In fact it’s damn near the carbon copy. And you could hardly blame Micanski for being so inspired by Messi’s genius against Zaragoza that he felt the need to pen an ode to it. There’s only one thing…
Micanski scored his goal on March 20th, Messi his on the 21st.
Lionel Messi: The New Iliyan Micanski.
(Ignore the fact that both were clearly copying Ronaldo.)
