The Plight of Goal Celebrations

By: chris | April 20th, 2009

Professional athletes spend countless hours honing and perfecting their respective crafts; nurturing the most minute details to hopefully achieve a moment of glory. Then what happens when that moment of glory comes? It all goes a bit wobbly. Poorly choreographed dancing, strange tribal rain dances and weird improvisational gestures sent to WAGs/groupies in the stands. Time for a more professional take to goal celebrations.

Example number one is above, from an unknown game somewhere on this vast planet at some unknown time. We think.

The second example comes from this weekend’s Beglian Jupiler League action, when Christian Benteke of Standard Liege celebrates Oguchi Onyewu’s goal by missing the pretty unmissable man entirely and winding up face first in some grass.

Where’s the chemistry, lads? You’re supposed to anticipate your teammate’s movements. (2:20)

[101 Great Goals]

So maybe coaches should set aside 15 or 20 minutes at the end of each practice to tighten up the post-goal party. This is entertainment, after all.

What’s more ridiculous? The miss on the leap for the celebration, or that Onyewu had two goals?

i love how the dude leaps beside and and is back up 2 seconds later. that was hilarious

Question: Why isnt Onyewu playing on some better team ? i could see him fitting in perfectly in the premier league. like on Chelsea, or Everton or something…
