The Refereeing Dream Team of Ineptitude

By: chris | February 4th, 2009

Everybody and their sister – even Big Phil’s sister – knows the worst noncall of the weekend was Bosingwa’s cleat to Yossi Benayoun’s back. So it’s unsurprising to hear that the linesman, Mo Matadar, who was standing all of a yard away and failed to tell the ref to send off Mr. Unibrow will be enjoying some League Two action between Exeter and Grimsby this weekend.

But what is surprising is the team the FA has selected him for, a team headed up by Stuart Attwell. Attwell, you may remember, was the 26 year old in charge of the Watford-Reading “ghost goal”. (Not to mention his Wiki page, at the ripe old age of 26, already has its own ‘Controversies’ section.)

This is the goal which made baffling headlines earlier in the fall and surely ruined Mr. Attwell’s career almost before it had begun:

Has there ever a game called due to protests by both teams? Or does the FA not care and faxes from League Two teams get rerouted directly to the trash bin?

If so, we pray for your souls, dear Grimsby and Exeter fans.

  • From what I heard at the FSC report the linesman did tell the referee what Bosingwa had done, but apparently the ref decided not to do anything about it. That is why the FA aren't taking action with any post-match suspensions, because the "refs saw the incident and decided not to apply any punishment".

Meaning "the FA's hands are tied" in a weird <del>hypocritical</del> bureaucratic sort of way.
