The Romario Goal Scoring Party might be headed Down Under

By: Bob | September 19th, 2006

romarioflag.jpgWhen last we checked in with Brazilian legend Romario, the 40-year-old was scoring goals for Miami FC, a team in the United States’ second division. Romario’s season in South Beach has come to an end, but the striker is not content to sit back and enjoy the goal scoring title he won in the States. He still needs 23 more goals to reach 1,000 for his career and he is determined to travel great lengths to achieve a feat that only Pele has accomplished.

There are reports coming out of Australia that Romario is mulling an offer to play with our erstwhile Fan for a Match team, Adelaide United. He would play Down Under for a four-week guest stint before presumably heading off elsewhere to find a league where 40-year-old goal scorers are still competitive.

“Romario and Australia is big news in Brazil,” said South American journalist Ricardo Setyon. “But he needs to be near beaches just like in Rio de Janeiro.”

Sounds a bit like Landon Donovan, only Romario isn’t afraid to search out new opportunities even if they bring him in contact with stingrays.

We’ll admit that we like the idea of a 40-year-old who can still go out and knock in goals, but we’re also a bit sad that Romario’s quest for the record books has come to this. Sure, he might put some butts in the seats in the A-league for a month and he might put the ball in the goal, but the mere fact that he is vagabonding around the world so that he can achieve a record only serves to cheapen the record.

We’d have a lot more respect for him if he simply stuck with one team for a few more years or if he hung up his boots today and accepted the applause he rightly deserves.

Well said. The guy is making a joke of things. He could still probably score in Brazil. Go home and play there.

Ah, Romário. Few players can provoke quite diverse opinions as he does. The guy’s one of the most annoying people I’ve even seen in Brazilian football, yet he’s one of the biggest geniuses to have played (inside the pitch at least).

Romário’s objective is nothing new. Prior to leaving his club in Brazil, the club was arranging weekly friendly matches with amateur clubs just for the sake of having Romário scoring - they’d win by, say, 6-0 without even trying. That severely undermined the quest and made Romário’s attempt a national joke, specially after they got to play against a “Masters” team (with players all above 40yo or something to that effect).

I hope he gets back to real business soon. 1000 or no 1000 goal, the guy is/was a genius, and this sad state of scoring affairs isn’t helping his image.
