The Taxi Drivers love Sunderland too

By: Bob | April 2nd, 2007

british-taxi.jpgSunderland are doing their best to win over fans everywhere. First their players were kind enough to put together a sex tape which has led 19,261 visitors to come to The Offside looking for the goods. We can’t wait until they release the sequel. And now we learn the club has won over the hearts and minds of taxi cab drivers everywhere.

Following their team’s 1-0 win at Cardiff City this weekend, 80 Sunderland fans were booted off their plane in Bristol because of disruptive behavior. The fans had reportedly imbibed a bit and were testing out their lung capacity by singing a little ditty about their former striker and current chairman Niall Quinn.

Niall Quinn’s disco pants are the best,
They go up from his arse to his chest,
They’re better than Adam and the Ants,
Niall Quinn’s disco pants!

Critics are right. The airlines suck these days. If you aren’t allowed to be drunk and to sing a song inspired by a player whose shirt was torn in a fight way back in 1992, then what is the point of flying at all?

Proving that he should be known for more than just his disco pants, Quinn paid 8,000 pounds ($15,780) to have the supporters transported home by taxis. In addition to winning over the support of the cab drivers and The Offside, Sunderland are winning on the pitch. They have not lost a league game in 2007 and are now second in the English Championship.

Sunderland is having an absolutely incredible run. I’ve watched about half the matches since Roy Keane took over (no losses in his first 14 matches as coach now), and it’s a completely different team. He’s setting himself up to be the perfect replacement for Fergie someday.
