It was 'rich boy' who 'poached' Grant from his mate at Portsmouth. Once Grant came, my boy who has been going to Chelsea games with me as soon as he was able to, said Grant is Chelsea's manager in waiting!!!!! Oh the sense of foresight from one so young!!!

Interesting post. There is currently only one manager (in the English football sense) in the Bundesliga, all other clubs chose the coach + sporting director combo. Though the media sometimes questions whether switching over to the more powerful English style manager would be the better option. Though I guess it's simply all about the quality of the people you appoint. A club like Bremen with the combo Schaaf / Allofs does a fantastic job and you couldn't imagine Thomas Schaaf doing both jobs equally well.

As a Spurs fan I can tell you why it has been implemented at Tottenham. He has an inherent distrust of coaches in general. For us, Arnesen wanted Jol and did everything he could to drive out Santini. Now that Comolli has taken over, he is doing everything to undermine Jol (and he has Levy's ear). So the DoF works if he has his coach. Or if the coach picks his DoF. Otherwise it leads to the exact thing we see in the Continental system where coaches last only a few years at each job.

Also England has the tradition of the gaffer being the ultimate authority. A DoF confuses the matter even further for the English.

I hate it. Hate it with a passion because of its impact a WHL.

I'd be interested in finding out more about why the DoF position is so incompatible with the game in England or perhaps even Britain as a whole considering Dalglish/Celtic, yet works so well on the continent. I can see the point with tradition, but managers like Wenger and SAF are few and far between. I'm sure someone at some university has studied it at some point.

And the only reason why Jose has gone is because 'rich boy' Abramovich 'believes' he has the best man for the job. 'Rich Boy' got that when Mourinho joined after Ranieri was sacked!!!
