The Type of Coach Real Salt Lake Needs

By: Bob | May 3rd, 2007

There is nothing super surprising about Real Salt Lake dumping its coach John Ellinger and firing its general manager Steve Pastorino. The team has struggled early on this season after a couple of less than outstanding seasons. Nor is it surprising that the Washington Post’s Steven Goff broke the story. It is a pity more papers in the US don’t have soccer beat writers as passionate about the sport as he is. What is surprising is that RSL are expected to name current player Jason Kreis as new coach. That tells you something about the coaching pool available in MLS. I guess Big Sam wasn’t interested. Let’s hope that Kreis brings the same fiery attitude that we see from Alan Shearer in the video above.

The biggest surprise is that Ellinger lasted as long as he did. If it weren’t for a late run last season he probably would have been canned before this year.
