There are 8 Million Reasons for Luis Figo to Play in Saudi Arabia
By: Bob | December 27th, 2006
The Luis Figo transfer rumors have been floating around for awhile, but today was the first day that the Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad was included in the scuttlebutt. The Inter Milan midfielder has apparently inked a deal to play in the Desert Kingdom for the next six months and will move there next week. To endure this hardship, he will be paid a crisp $8 million. Yes, that is $8 million for six months’ work. We’re all just planetary dust in Luis Figo’s universe.
Who can fault Figo for this decision? At 34 years of age, his best days are behind him and he has little left to prove on the pitch. If he wants to chase after some bucks to make his difficult life with his Swedish model wife a bit more comfortable, so be it. His is a tough life, but someone has to lead it. One can only hope that he adjusts to things in Saudi Arabia better than some of his predecessors. Somehow I imagine he’ll get by while he bides his time for the really big bucks from MLS, maybe even this summer after his vacation in the desert comes to an end.

This sounds like pretty much the same story that was going around this morning, except this time with an imaginary source sited — I don’t think there’s been any movement yet. That said, Italy Offside will be draped in black bunting when the deal goes through.

Al Ittihad announced it today so it is official. Too bad he decided to leave right when Inter Milan was playing their best soccer.

And the deed is done. You can’t tell because I have mad typing skills, but I’m weeping and gnashing my teeth right now.
