Thierry Henry Named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People

By: Bob | May 3rd, 2007

henry-muppets.jpgIt has been a dispiriting year on the pitch for Thierry Henry. There was that loss in the World Cup final. Arsenal have been largely disappointing. He lost out on the Ballon d’Or again. And an injury has forced him to sit out the past few months. Off the pitch, however, TH14 has done quite well for himself.

He has earned a bundle of dough. He has earned praised for his snappy wardrobe. He has hung out with some boring superstars, a boring yet impeccably proper leader and a not-so-boring superstar.

All of this is apparently enough to warrant his inclusion as the only footballer on Time magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in 2007. My theory is that he was included because they needed an excuse to show him without his shirt. Notably absent from the list is David Beckham, who received the honor back in 2004.

Notably present on the list are influential people like Anna Netrebko, Alber Elbaz and a dozen more people you have probably never heard of.

I’ll bet that when Beckham made the list he at least had the decency to wax his chest hair.

The world’s most influential or the world’s harriest? Who knew what lurked beneath his jersey.

I really like Henry, both on and off the pitch. I think he’s more well balanced than a lot of other football stars because while he doesn’t do anything like sleeping with prostitutes (I’m looking at you, Wayne), he still makes the not-so-occasional eyebrow raising comment in the media (Spurs, hahaha). He has a huge ego, but I can forgive that because he appeared on Sesame Street.

And he really really loves his team. When he was sidelined with an injury, I remember he still ran out on the pitch to celebrate with Adebayor scored a goal.

I guess he’s one of the better global representatives of football.

That piece was “written” by Tony Parker. THAT Tony Parker. Too much.

Henry is the best. He brings a smile to my face every time he plays.
