Think Next Time They’ll Trust David James with a Backpass?
By: Laurie | December 5th, 2008
I always feel a little guilty for picking on goalkeepers when they blunder. Except that it’s just so much fun.
(And the sad part is, I really like David James. But he has been known to make the occasional howler. Like this one.)
This was yesterday’s UEFA Cup match, Portsmouth against Wolfsburg. Portsmouth needed the win, but instead the match went to Wolfsberg, 3-2. James did manage to save a penalty towards the end, but it wasn’t enough.
And Portsmouth are, sadly, out of the UEFA Cup.

Yes, it was an awful, horrendous mistake – but, it didn’t knock pompey out of europe. Braga beating herenveen did that. Had he not conceeded the goal, pompey would have been even less likely to score, as they wouldnt have pushed on as much, and wolfsburg wouldnt have let them attack as much. and anyway, he DID save the penalty…

Thanks for the clarification, Pete. I was relying on a news report from a newspaper that either stated or implied that it was this game that made it happen. Or not happen, as the case may be.
