Those ‘Special Feelings’ ruin Coed Soccer and Religious Understanding
By: Bob | May 7th, 2007
It was all set to be one of those heartwarming stories that would bring us all together and lead to one rousing chorus of ‘Kumbaya’ after another. Muslim and Christian religious leaders in Norway had scheduled a match between priests and imams as a way of fostering religious understanding, but alas the imams bailed at the last minute because they were ok playing against priests who don’t use their male genitalia but not so interested in playing against priests lacking male genitalia.
Reuters has the official explanation.
The imams said physical contact with women would be inappropriate, NRK public television said, and the Norwegian Christians refused a proposal of a male-only clash. The match was to have followed talks meant to build bridges between faiths in Norway.
“Some say that bodily contact is the problem. It leads to special feelings that can lead to something forbidden,” imam Senaid Kobilica told NRK public television in explanation.
I can relate. I know that I always get a special feeling when a female slide tackles me during one of my co-ed matches. That special feeling usually results in me going in cleats up against one of her teammates. It is tough to turn the other cheek.
While the imams used the special feelings excuse, I think that they saw this video of Marta, the world’s top footballer, and they wanted no part of it. Can’t say I blame them. I think I just had a special feeling watching it. No wonder her team just won the quadruple.
